Many people have loved the Rocky Movies. These motivational movies starring Sylvestor Stallone tell the story about an underdog who ultimately makes it to the very top. Here is a brief history of those movies.

The original Rocky movie came out in 1976 and starred Sylvestor Stallone who wrote the screenplay. It was created for under $1 million and turned into a sleeper hit with worldwide revenues of about $225 million.

The movie became the highest grossing movie of 1976. That season it got three Oscars including one for Best Picture. In addition, it received critical praise from the press and introduced Stallone to a significant star.

The first Rocky movie tells the story of Rocky Balboa who’s an but sort hearted debt collector for a Philadelphia loan shark. Through a stroke of luck, Rocky found himself having a shot at the world heavyweight championships if the scheduled competition broke his hands.

The movie’s cast also features Talia Shire like Adrian, Burt Young as Adrian’s brother along with Rocky’s buddy Paulie, Burgess Meredith as Rocky’s trainer Mickey Goldmill, and finally Carl Weathers because the current champion Apollo Creed.

It’s not known but due to the low budget of this movie, a number of Stallone’s loved ones played minor roles. Stallone’s dad played the individual who rung the bell to signal the start and end of a round; his brother Frank played a street corner fighter, along with his wife Sasha served as the group photographer.

When this job was offered to the studios, they all liked the idea but viewed it as a great vehicle for a recognized male celebrity like Robert Redford, Ryan O’Neil, of James Caan. Stallone appealed to the studios to be given the opportunity to star in the movie. He was quoted later as having felt he could have never forgiven himself in case the movie became a hit without him in the starring role.

Determining who to play the role of Adrian was a little challenging. Initially the function was placed with Carrie Snodgress but a money dispute shifted this. Susan Sarandon was auditioned however she was deemed too pretty for its position. Following Talia Shire read for the job, she was signed and the rest is history.
